Added at 17:19, 22 Feb 2012An application to log wasp sightings
We want to develop a picture of wasp trends throughout the UK; where there are most wasps and how many there are. To log a sighting you can use Twitter or Facebook, or you can mark directly on the map. Use the key below to record how serious the sighting is on a scale of 1-10.
MAP: Enter your postcode above and use the slider to zoom in and click on your exact location. Then simply enter your message and the scale of the sighting.
FACEBOOK: Visit the UKWaspWatch Facebook app and log your sighting as per the MAP instructions
TWITTER: Tweet the hashtag #ukwaspwatch, your postcode and how serious the sighting is using the above key
You can use either your full postcode or just the first half of your postcode if you don't know it fully. If you use the full postcode the position of the marker will be more accurate.
While getting stung by a wasp is merely a painful inconvenience for most people, it is particularly worrying for those who suffer from severe allergic reactions. In some cases, wasp stings can lead to anaphylactic shock, a condition where the body's immune system reacts inappropriately by releasing chemicals that act on blood vessels to cause swelling in the mouth and on the skin, falling blood pressure and asthmatic reactions.
UKWaspWatch is now supporting registered charity The Anaphylaxis Campaign by donating 20p whenever you log a wasp or wasps' nest sighting onto the map throughout the wasp season (June to September).
The Anaphylaxis Campaign is the only UK charity to exclusively meet the needs of the growing numbers of people at risk from severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) by providing information and support relating to foods and other triggers such as latex, drugs and insect stings.
Its ultimate aim is to create a safe environment for all people with severe allergy by educating the food industry, schools, pre-schools, colleges, health professionals and other key audiences. It focuses on medical facts, food labelling, risk reduction and allergen management.
